Hire a UK agency when you need frequent face-to-face work, a vendor under UK law and a team that knows your market first-hand. Outsource abroad when the scope is well defined, the budget is the main constraint and you can manage with fewer live hours. Neither choice protects you from a bad vendor, so the process you use to select and manage them matters more than the location.
We are an overseas studio, based in Lahore, so we have an obvious interest here. What follows is the reasoning we would want if we were buying.
What a UK agency does better
Proximity is real. Workshops in person, a shared working day and a vendor you can visit make discovery faster and reduce misunderstandings. If your product is still taking shape, that closeness is worth paying for.
A UK agency also operates under the same legal system as you. Contracts, intellectual property terms and data protection obligations are familiar ground, and enforcing a contract is more straightforward when both sides are in the same jurisdiction. Some buyers, particularly in the public sector or regulated industries, will also have procurement rules that favour or require a domestic supplier.
The cost of all this is higher day rates. For a limited budget, that usually means a smaller team, a narrower scope or a longer timeline.
What outsourcing abroad does better
Overseas teams typically offer more engineering capacity for the same budget, which matters when you need a multi-part build, such as an API, a web portal and a mobile app, rather than a single screen. A focused MVP of that kind is typically an 8-14 week fixed-scope build with us, and real numbers come from a written scoping call rather than a guess.
A flexible model also helps. Overseas studios often offer a dedicated team or a monthly build-and-run arrangement that you can scale up or down, which suits products that keep evolving.
Where outsourcing abroad goes wrong
Time zones and communication are the usual failure points. Lahore overlaps with the UK working day only in part, and we cover Gulf and Australian hours live rather than UK hours. A UK buyer should expect scheduled calls, written updates and a delay on urgent questions, and should decide honestly whether that is workable.
Other risks are the same anywhere but are harder to fix at a distance: vague scope, no weekly demos, unclear ownership of the code, and no support after launch. The protections are also the same. Ask for a written scope, working software every week, full source and infrastructure handover in writing, and a defined post-launch fix window. Our fixed-scope plan includes a 30-day window.
A practical way to choose
Run the same test on every vendor, local or not. Ask for a live walkthrough of a comparable system already in production. Ask to speak to the engineers, not only an account manager. Ask who owns the code. Ask for the scoping output in writing before you commit.
If you need workshops in the room, procurement-friendly paperwork or a very fast response to urgent issues, choose a UK agency and budget for it. If your scope is clear and your main constraint is budget, an overseas studio with strong written process is a reasonable choice. Either way, take advice on contracts and data protection before you sign.
